Lately, I have been spending my DIY/project time rearranging things and adding some touches of fun in our home. I am currently saving up to buy a few large pieces, but in the meantime I am enjoying working with what we have! Check it out:
I just love our little built-in bookshelves in the living room! I know that they aren't expansive, but I have always wanted built-ins and they satisfied my craving! More than just that, I love the history of how they came to be. You see, our home was originally built as a one bedroom, and the room that is now our guest bedroom was a formal sitting room. Where the bookshelves are was actually once an open doorway leading to the sitting room. I'm not sure when exactly the door was closed in, but I just love that whoever did it took advantage of the space by building shelving!!
When James and I first moved in, I just kind of set what I grabbed first up on the built-ins. The other day I was sitting on the sofa and I realized that I was missing out on a great opportunity there. So, I got to work pulling out pretty books and a few of my favorite objects to create a vignette on the shelves. While it is still a work in progress, I am MUCH happier with it! Soon, I will post a DIY on how to cover books in wrapping paper (I'm going to do it on those orange travel books on the top right of the shelves).

Currently, our guest bedroom is very much a work in progress! It is just not the top priority, and we have pressed pause on working on it for now (boo taxes and car maintenance!) But, it did recently get a little sprucing up!
For Christmas this past December, I gave James a print of a painting that he absolutely loves. It is called the Goldfinch and is one of the most famous works of Dutch painter Carel Fabritus. When we saw it at the High Museum, James stopped in his tracks. He was mesmerized by its uniqueness. Right then I knew what I would be getting him for the next holiday! What is so interesting about the piece is that it is meant to be viewed from below. When you are looking up at it the goldfinch leaps off the canvas.

In our master bedroom, I decided to hang the streamer garland we used in our wedding ceremony above our bed. I think it creates a romantic feel without being too ridiculous. Also, I snagged some fabric samples from work and framed them in gold and black frames to finish off the art wall. That DIY could not have been easier or cheaper!
I think these little updates have really created a more finished feel! I truly enjoy fiddling around the house and seeing how things look in different areas. I'm not sure my home will ever feel finished, and that's part of the fun!
